White God

Well, if you’re looking for something different, you can’t go wrong with Kornél Mundruczó’s genre-buster White God. Part a dystopic version of Disney’s The Incredible Journey and part The Rise Of The Canines, it’s a black comedy which after a sustained opening of awkward father-daughter relationships, moody rebellious teens and lost shaggy dog stories switchbacks to a canine uprising as the abused and abandoned pet Hagen is captured, sold and trained into a prize fighter before leading an organised escape from the pound and waging war on the white gods that wronged him. Lurching into science fiction with an opening scene reminiscent of 28 Days Later and horror with its final-girl scares, White God questions the loyalty of man’s best friend. And for dog lovers the world over, it’s bound to be terrifying.

White God is showing on Oct 10th & 14th at the 58th BFI London Film Festival
