The London Film Festival opens tonight with Captain Phillips, Tom Hanks bookending the festival with Saving Mr Banks for the closing night gala. And while Captain Phillips may invite comparison with Tobias Lindholm’s A Hijacking, the corporate negotiations have been replaced with a nailbiting cat and mouse thriller. Greengrass’s film unfortunately veers off-course as the hijacking gives way to kidnap and the tension turns to a display of American might. And with galas of the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska and Kelly Reichardt’s Night Moves, could it be a taste of things to come?
