LEILA’S BROTHERS directed by SAEED ROUSTAEE
STARS AT NOON directed by CLAIRE DENIS
PACIFICTION directed by ALBERT SERRA
The Catalan director’s fascinating movie in French, set in the colourful French Polynesian island of Tahiti. Working on many levels, it creates a portrait of an enigmatic man, the top-ranking French official on the islands.
BROKER (LES BONNES ÉTOILES) directed by KORE-EDA HIROKAZU
Song Kang-ho (Parasite) leads the ensemble in Kore-eda‘s characteristically understated story of crime and compassion, about a Korean alternative family looking to find a home for an abandoned baby. The film embraces the idea that its characters can evolve emotionally and seek outcomes they might not have previously considered, says Deadline. The director has an unfaltering light touch, injecting emotional truth and spontaneity.
Kore-eda can make melodrama seem like social realism. His embrace of sentimentality in Broker shows why he’s considered such a master, especially in the film’s second half, with scene after scene of piercing poignancy, says Hollywood Reporter.
Kore-eda’s compassionate investigation touches on the many complex reasons a young mother might have for giving up a child – a subject that acquires heightened relevance as the US barges ahead with legislative measures to remove a woman’s right to choose.
“The baby box is an ongoing thing in Japan and Korea. Public opinion hasn’t really decided if it’s a good or bad thing,” Kore-da said at the Cannes press conference. “I believe this is a very controversial topic and it deserves careful thought in any event. I wanted to view things like the majority of people. A lot of people have preconceived ideas of women who give up their children. Hence the detective who represents public opinion at the onset of the film; the first line is that she shouldn’t have given birth if she intended to give up the baby and abandon it…
“The two hours of films is to open people’s minds,” he continued, “People call into question their hasty viewpoints on baby box. I didn’t want to give an answer in any way…
“The characters have committed major crimes, but there’s a drive for once in their life to do something good,” he said.
“The more serious things are, the more I want to add a light touch, a touch of humour; I like these contrasts.”

Le Bleu du Caftan directed by Mariam Touzani
In a film of exquisite sensuality and sadness. there’s a melancholy relationship triangle involving a tailor, his dying wife and his male apprentice. Touzani’s stripped-down screenplay never takes predictable paths, even when it does fulfil expectations.
